HISTORY OF SAJJANGARH BIOLOGICAL PARK
Pre-Independence Era: Area part of Maharana hunting grounds. Sajjangarh Palace (Monsoon Palace) built 1884 by Maharana Sajjan Singh at 934m elevation for monsoon cloud watching. Surrounding forests rich in leopards, deer, birds.
Post-Independence: 1950s Rajasthan Forest Dept surveys Aravalli biodiversity. 1980s urban expansion threatens natural habitat around Udaipur. 2000s eco-tourism push identifies Sajjangarh foothills ideal for conservation park.
2015 Establishment: Officially opened March 2015 by Rajasthan Govt. Initial 25 sq km expanded to 36 sq km. First animals: rescued leopards, deer from Udaipur outskirts. Crocodile park added 2016 with Mugger + Gharial.
2017-2020 Development: 4 watchtowers, 5km trails, jeep safari routes. Butterfly park, reptile house operational. First tiger pair introduced 2019. AR app launched 2020 for education.
2021-2023 Conservation: Breeding success - tiger cubs born 2022. 35+ spotted deer population stable. Nocturnal house construction started. COVID recovery saw 2 lakh+ visitors 2023.
2024-2025 Major Projects: Rs 3.45 Cr Lion Safari approved May 2024. 50-acre enclosure completed Dec 2025. Jaipur Forest officials inspected. 8 Asiatic Lions transfer from Gujarat approved for Jan 2026 opening.
