Distance and Route Options

The road distance between Delhi and Agra varies slightly by route but is most commonly around 230–243 km when you travel via the modern Yamuna Expressway, which is widely considered the fastest and most comfortable option. Most travellers cover this section in about 3 to 4 hours by private car, depending on traffic at the Delhi end, rest stops and speed limits on the expressway.

Alternative routes using old national highways (such as sections of NH 19 and NH 44) can be longer and slower, but they pass through more towns and local areas, which some visitors enjoy for the additional roadside scenery and stops.

Best Season to Travel

November to March is generally the most comfortable window for a Delhi–Agra day tour, with cooler temperatures and clearer skies. Summer afternoons from April to June can feel hot and require more water breaks and lighter sightseeing in the middle of the day. The monsoon months of July to September bring occasional showers but also dramatic skies, especially for photography at the Taj Mahal.

Taj Mahal

Built by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan as a mausoleum for his wife Mumtaz Mahal, the white marble monument is surrounded by ornamental gardens, reflecting pools, a red‑sandstone gateway, a mosque and a matching guest pavilion. Your guided visit covers the main mausoleum platform, the intricate pietra dura inlay work, Quranic calligraphy and the classic viewpoints near the reflecting pool. Agra Fort

Itmad‑ud‑Daulah – Baby Taj (Optional)

Built for Mirza Ghiyas Beg, father of Nur Jahan, it features delicate pietra dura work, fine lattice screens and a peaceful garden setting. It makes an excellent late‑afternoon stop if time allows, offering a quieter, less crowded alternative to the main Taj complex.

Mehtab Bagh (Optional)

A riverside garden complex directly across the Yamuna from the Taj Mahal, Mehtab Bagh is one of the best spots in Agra for sunset silhouettes and wide‑angle photographs of the monument. It is a calm, open space with few crowds, making it a relaxing way to end your Agra sightseeing before beginning the drive back to Delhi.

5:00–5:30 AM – Early Morning Pickup in Delhi

Your driver arrives at your hotel, residence or the airport in Delhi, Noida or Gurgaon. After a quick briefing on the day's plan, you begin the drive towards Agra via the Yamuna Expressway. For sunrise visits, pickup is adjusted to between 2:30 AM and 3:30 AM.

5:30–8:30 AM – Highway Drive to Agra

Enjoy the smooth six‑lane expressway with one brief stop for tea, coffee, snacks and washrooms at a clean midway service area. Travelling at this hour means minimal Delhi traffic and a fast, calm journey.

8:30–9:00 AM – Arrive in Agra & Meet Your Guide

On arrival in Agra, meet your local licensed guide (if included in your package). Your guide helps with entry formalities and coordinates with your driver so you move smoothly to the Taj Mahal gate.

9:00–11:00 AM – Guided Visit to the Taj Mahal

Enter the Taj Mahal complex and explore the main mausoleum, mosque and guest pavilion, ornamental gardens and reflecting pools. Your guide shares the history, architecture and stories behind the monument, and helps you find the best viewpoints for photographs. If you chose the sunrise option, this slot shifts earlier to coincide with first entry.

11:15 AM–12:15 PM – Lunch in Agra

Break for lunch at a recommended local restaurant or hotel in Agra, with options ranging from Indian thali to international buffet or à la carte menus. Lunch is payable directly unless included in your package.

12:30–2:00 PM – Visit to Agra Fort

Drive the short distance to Agra Fort and walk through the Diwan‑i‑Aam, Diwan‑i‑Khas, Jahangiri Mahal and other palace sections, learning how the Mughal emperors lived and ruled from Agra. Your guide connects the fort's history to what you have already seen at the Taj Mahal.

2:15–3:15 PM – Optional: Baby Taj or Mehtab Bagh

If time and energy allow, visit Itmad‑ud‑Daulah (Baby Taj) for its delicate marble inlay and peaceful gardens, or head to Mehtab Bagh for alternative riverfront views of the Taj Mahal and a quieter walk. Both stops are optional and can be skipped if you prefer to start the return drive earlier.

3:30–4:00 PM – Begin Return Drive to Delhi

Start the return journey to Delhi via the Yamuna Expressway, with the possibility of a short tea or snack break en route.

8:00–9:00 PM – Drop‑Off in Delhi

Arrive back in Delhi and get dropped at your hotel, residence or the airport, depending on your onward travel plans. All timings are approximate and can be shifted based on your pace, interests and traffic conditions.
